As quoted by the father of Western medicine, Hippocrates. There is truth in this, and yet ironically, Western medicine is the only form of medicinal practice that strays so far from using our food as our medicine. Western medicine resorts to drugs to suppress the diseases. I specifically use “suppress” because Western medicine mainly treats the symptoms of the diseases rather than treating the cause. A look at Ayurveda or Chinese Medicine tells you that both mainly use natural foods and herbs. Moreover, both look deep down into the core, the root, of any diseases and ailments. They aim to make the body healthy again by giving it natural foods that it is supposed to get.
Our body is naturally very strong and has self-healing capabilities, that is, if given the right nourishment. We are faced with so many diseases and allergies today because of the staggering amount of processed food we eat. We are not eating what Mother Earth provides us. Instead we add on lots of chemicals and additives to make our food “tastier” and more convenient. We genetically-engineer crops to create hybrids, to make them grow faster and bigger, to make them resistant to pests. Little do we know that adding these toxins to our convenience can kill us and our planet.
Growing up in Taiwan, I didn’t know a single person with allergies to certain types of food. When I went to California for college, I was somewhat shocked at how many people are allergic to peanuts, milk, gluten, etc. Why does America have higher percentage of population living with allergies? Look at how processed their food is.
That, compared to a family in Egypt.

Hm, what’s strangely missing in the first picture? Vegetables and fruits. Only a few tomatoes, a couple bunches of grapes, and perhaps a handful of others only. I wonder if that relates to the rates of obesity, heart diseases, cancer, strokes in the United States.
Here is a TED Talk video of Dr. Terry Wahls, who cured her multiple sclerosis by changing her diet into a diet filled with natural, wholesome food. She tried multiple treatments and used many drugs, but still ended up in a wheelchair, and food came to the rescue.
During my TT, we watched a documentary called “Food Matters” (http://www.foodmatters.tv/index), where the filmmakers interviewed leading experts in nutrition and natural healing. With proper and natural nutrition, they claim, one can rid his chronic illnesses.
